Sweet Dreams and Other Precious Moments

Last night I kissed goodbye my 8 year old. Tucked in the sheets around him. Turned out the lights and finished my evening. This morning, I kissed hello my 9 year old. We talked about the wonderful memories we have of each age ... I realize how we die to each day, emerging anew with advancing experience.

So it is we celebrate with cupcakes! For this and any special occasion, I recommend Frost Me Sweet in Richland, Washington. Not only are the cakes delicious and delightful, but the company is environmentally conscientious. They are a green business with a sweet story!

On another occasion, you might enjoy the Bistro menu at Frost Me Sweet. It includes a variety of small plates and local wines! This is a perfect spot to visit after a stroll along the Parkway. Or before a show. The Richland Players are at it again. My Three Angels will entertain us in November.

Yummy Wine ... Better Defined

I am still ruminating over the education event ten of us attended at Goose Ridge Estates winery. Hosted by Steven Womack, we were guided through the winemaking process from seeds of the vines to bottling. Variations in the process for whites versus reds were outlined. And we got to taste Malbec grapes off the vine.

Then we sauntered indoors to gather around the barrels. Here Steven poured a splash of white wine for each of us, handing it over with the firm command "don't drink it yet." First we were told to look at the wine. The rim color if greenish for whites or purplish for reds will indicate younger wines versus golden amber or burgundy brown shades, respectively. Swirl the wine and watch the "legs" drip down the inside of the glass. These indicate alcohol levels - more legs, more alcohol.

Next we were instructed to take in the aroma. Swirl the wine to release molecules that provide the aroma or bouquet. And then, with your nose about 1/2 inch above the rim, sniff with mouth slightly open. This provides the fullest scent intake without overwhelming the senses to the point one cannot smell at all. Take a quick whiff for initial impressions and then a deeper smell before you sit back and evaluate. The flavors you find are from the grape, the barrels, and the fermentation process.

Now, we are finally ready to taste. We are looking for a balance between sweetness and acidity; agreeably proportionate fruit, acid, and wood flavors. Take an initial sip to awaken your senses. Taste it more fully; swish it in your mouth to cover taste buds. Draw in some air and consider the characteristics. And finally ponder the aftertaste - how long does the flavor last in your mouth? what are the flavors you recognize?

Declare your conclusions about quality and maturity. More importantly, tell us whether you liked the wine!

Public Art is planned and executed with the specific intention of being sited or staged in a certain area … Thus, Public Art should be pursued proactively alongside the plan(s) for Tri Cities development.

Like other cities, 1% of construction costs could be set aside for art. Thus, public areas and commercial developments would be peppered with public art so to perhaps secure a more unique presence and recognition for the site. Recreation funds could be allocated to art that offers participation and interactive possibilities … such as the hydraulaphone in Ontario Canada or the Battenkill urban oasis in Thomas Paine Park, Manhattan.

Balance sustainable art such as restoring the architecture of downtown Kennewick or creating parks with attractions such as gardens and labyrinths; and performance art such as street theatre, dance, or curbside music; and memorial art that reflects the history of Tri Cities – Lewis & Clark, Kennewick Man, various native tribal customs, current customs ~ with expressive art in all of its forms.

Art attracts an audience. Art can distinguish this area - and it can differentiate the many facets of Tri Cities. Art reflects life and provides an opportunity for reflection on life.

Recipe - Jicama Ahi Tacos

With the warm weather, it is time to "lighten up" and do some summer cooking! I shared this recipe with Cañon de Sol winery for their eNewsletter, Enjoy. Any time you serve them, these tacos are refreshing and tasty.

Slice 2 cups jicama super thin with a 3mm mandolin blade.

Cut 1 lb ahi tuna into about 1-inch by 1-inch by 4-inches. Coat liberally with pepper and a little salt. Heat a sauté pan until very hot; add 1 tablespoon vegetable oil and the sear tuna on all sides for about 15 seconds per side. Make sure to just sear outside of tuna and not allow inside to cook. Remove from heat and refrigerate promptly. Once cooled, slice into 1/8-inch thick slices.

Prepare the toppings: 1 red onion thinly sliced, shred 1/2 head romaine lettuce, and cut 1 medium avocado into small chunks.

Plan on 3-4 tiny tacos per person. Top each piece of raw jicama with a couple pieces of ahi, a few chunks of avocado, onion, romaine, a dollop of sour cream and some tomato salsa. Add a sprig of cilantro.

And of course, pair with Cañon de Sol Viogner or your favorite local wine.

A fave is to gather for lunch with a girlfriend to catch up on all the venting, gossip, and shared advice one can handle over a Portabella Road mushroom pizza at Atomic Ale. Oh, and desert ~ Plutonium Porter Chocolate Containment Cake ~ don't ask, just indulge. Afterward, it is necessary to shop off the extra calories (though, calories consumed among friends are priceless).

First, a stop at Greenies to select some organic goodies for the pantry while eyeing the tee's. Ooh, and a great time to get a gift for that upcoming birthday!

Then, on to another part of town where Malania welcomes you with a live, indoor palm tree plus chic selections to help one express one's fashion sense. And, a few days after making my purchase, I received a hand written thank you not in the mail. Nice touch!

Well that is as much as one could squeeze in between appointments this afternoon. Lots to catch up with you in the current of Tri Cities.

Reading has branched out to be a great social activity. Just join a book club.

The Glam Girls Book Club meets monthly to compare reactions and ruminations over the Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris ~ Sookie Stackhouse 8-copy Boxed Set (Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood) .

The latest gathering was hosted at Cheese Louise in Richland. We visited the Anelare tasting facility in Southridge ... My hubby likes Nona Viola while my fave is the Ciel du Cheval Syrah. Of course, membership has its priveleges ... so we signed up to indulge ourselves. This private, limited edition winery is sure to please; joining the "club" means never missing out on a "tasty" opportunity.

Kim's birthday. Another life event to celebrate ~ and enjoy!

For this occasion, we headed to a haunt called Picazo 7Seventeen in nearby Prosser. The setting entices with rich color, a display of art, and a variety of wines. We started the evening with cocktails at the bar while admiring the glass display ~ especially the stunning chandelier which came from Owen Adam.

The menu provided ample opportunity for flavor sensations. We started with clams & mussels, crab cakes, and shrimp stuffed with chorizo & wrapped with ham. Then the table was topped with Lamb, Chicken, Pasta, and Halibut dishes that were sure to satisfy.

After tasting a Daven Lore Red Tail at the bar (one of the featured wines of the month), the food was accompanied by Meritage and Syrah wines from Cañon de Sol, and a Cabernet Sauvignon from Gamache. A toast to friendship and good times!

We presented Kim with a birthday gift from Heaven Sent Jewelry ~ a purse holder to host any one of her famous bags! Before dessert, Picazo Chef Frank Magaña stopped by to visit, and to say Happy Birthday to the celebrant.

The road home was a wonderful route through rolling hills and a starry sky, currently carrying traffic through Tri Cities.

Cañon de Sol Winery Celebrated 10

After ten years in the sunshine of Washington state and the Columbia Valley, Cañon de Sol Winery celebrates with a weekend of events.

Friday, the 28th of August, the winery hosted an Anniversary dinner featuring a multi-course meal especially prepared by Castle Catering to pair with Cañon de Sol wines. Appetizing shrimp were paired with Viognier while guests gathered. The first course was a Beet & Goat Cheese Salad with Fried Green Tomato. Merlot was paired with Salmon Nicoise and Duck Breast with fruit salsa. Meritage accompanied Chorizo with Fig and Chicken Apple Sausage. Finally, Syrah was paired with Shredded Lamb Tamales. The group moved to the barrel room to taste Library Wines and enjoy a variety of desserts.

Victor Cruz was presented with a champagne Saber to commemorate his achievement. As his wife, Kim, cheered him on, Cruz quickly learned the art and demonstrated his new talent - practicing on a bottle of Veuve Cliquot before adeptly opening a bottle of Dom Perignon. The evening was accompanied by the music of Dean Backholm. "It is an honor to be part of the joy and success that Victor is sharing in this celebration," Backholm says. The dinner, limited to 75 guests, sold out early.

In a touching presentation by the Cruz children, Ciara and Nicholas, many an eye teared. The evening blossomed with games and cherished wine giveaways. Trivial Pursuit enveloped Victor's pursuit of Cañon de Sol excellence. His first bottle of Syrah sold for $30 (not $28), and he has zero acres of grapes (for he hand selects his fruit for each vintage).

On Saturday, the 29th of August, the winery hosted a party for 300 guests. Food was catered via the much loved Taqueria Los Toritos taco wagon; and the music of Curtis Nettles stirred the crowd. Many were moved to dancing the night away.

Embracing a tradition passed to America from Mexico, the evening featured a piñata filled with corks. This gave attendees a blow at the ever-popular party game - and when the corks fell, many guests found discounts on Cañon de Sol wines.

"It was a treat to taste the Cañon de Sol library wines!" says Melissa McAloon, Member Services Director for Tri City Regional Chamber of Commerce. A special opportunity to sample limited availability Cañon de Sol library wines was offered to tasters at the event.

To commemorate this milestone, Cañon de Sol Winery offers limited edition etched magnums of Cañon de Sol Syrah and Cañon de Sol Meritage. Only 250 of each were made available, signed and numbered by winemaker Victor Cruz. Magnums are priced at $375 each, and special requests are being accepted for select numbers in the sequence (requests honored as available when received).

Victor Cruz has a passion for making good wine. As he says, "Good wine should be for everybody."

It was a Wine Bar Wednesday evening at Bella an Italian Deli. Wine Bar Wednesday gave us a chance to try various Red Mountain wines by the glass and splurge on tasty appetizers before select dinner choices. We had a lightly chilled Kiona Sangiovese with a spice-steamed artichoke dipped in aioli butter. Salad with warm steak. Chicken ziti. Must return for dessert.

Roll with the GGGGGood Times ...

Thanks to the fine planning of girl friends, I enjoyed a celebration of another year gone by (too quickly, I must admit). We started off our gathering in the new tasting room at Goose Ridge Winery. At the bar, we sniffed and sipped through the Merlot, Syrah, Q3 Red Wine, Vireo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sol Duc! Then we purchased a bottle (just try to guess which one - yes, it was red) to savor while lounging in overstuffed chairs near the fireplace.

Here I was presented gifts from some of the most fun places including a French style bonnet with netting that I immediately placed upon my noggin to help keep my thoughts from flying all over the place!

Having worked up an appetite, we headed for Katya's Bistro and Wine Bar. Saving room for desserts (chocolate decadence and lemon cake), we each ordered a Strawberry & Asparagus Salad, then we shared crab cakes and stuffed mushrooms and Chicken Marsala.

T'was an evening of gulping, gabbing, giggling, and gracious gobbling among great girlfriends. GGGGGood Time had by all.

A Divine Date with the Dust Devils

We traveled in light traffic and found a reasonably close-to-the-arena parking spot. Arriving through the not-so-pearly gates at Gesa Stadium, we received a bamboo back scratcher, courtesy of Back to Basics Chiropractic (remind me to get adjusted sometime soon).

The air was alive with the scent of various Lamb Weston French Fries - and, of course, we indulged. Our first batch were Fajita Fries - with a south of the border sass that went well with beer (lite or root). Next, we enjoyed the seasoned Tasty QQQ's spiral fries... after which, we were enticed by the fresh Kettle Corn.

The Dust Devils played a losing game, but still we rocked the stadium in hope and cheer. And, the children were invited to run across the outfield during the 7th inning stretch - something I never experienced at a Dodgers, Twins, A's or Mariners game!

In the end, there was a short fireworks show ... and we were given a game ball and a game bat - a Louisville Slugger, none the less! Went to the game, had a ball, got a bat ...

Golfing with God: A Novel of Heaven and Earth by Roland Merullo.

This is the "bible" I embrace to guide my steps this summer. And it is quite an interesting read. As I struggle with my golf game, and with the meaning of life, I find lessons that interweave the dirt and divine. Patience, Trust, Humility, Service. Fore!

Took me a while to get along with the golf lingo - much because it is an unfamiliar jargon that I am working to understand (much like God). So, step into the tee box and join me ... "marching straight toward the great battlefield at the outer edges of who I thought I was."

Was My Face Red! Thankfully I Made the Green.

Yes. It was one of those days. I had sent the golf cart away with Northwest Golf Cars due to running the front tire amok on a jutting retaining-wall stone resulting in a tilt on the right. This just after my husband returned with news that his golf days would be interrupted with more than one surgery anticipated for his neck and for his spine. Thankful for great facilities at Kadlec.

As the evening set in and the day came to a soft close, we came up with the brilliant idea to pitch and putt on the green outside our home. A little golf is good for the soul. Being members of The Club, we were mindful to ensure no one was playing the hole before marching out there to practice with a bucket of balls. Yes. A. bucket.

Once we had peppered the green with mostly well-hit shots (finally, I am learning to use my wedge), a gent marched over to holler at us for misusing the green. As I looked at the scene from his perspective, I realized that we had been quite excessive. And the flush came over my cheeks. We told him he was right to let us know, gave our apology and assurances that we would not let it happen again.

While we picked up the balls, limiting ourselves to one each for putting, we noticed eyes still looking our way. I walked over to apologize again to find that they assumed, by our behavior, that we were not members. I assured them we were full-fare devotees who lost our heads. Yes, if we had seen us doing this, we would have hollered at us too. I gave our apologies again, and then took our son to play the hole with just one ball each as my hubby instead gave his customary attention to perfecting every divot so the green remains true.

The lesson: even adults attempting to be good role models make mistakes; and need to say "sorry;" and must fix anything that was disrupted. Oh, and, today I can hit the ball consistently with my irons while my putting still needs help.

We are living out our dream ~ living on the golf course.

Golfing Meadow Springs is habit forming. Hitting the ball right once brings you back a thousand times ... just to experience that sweet spot again.

So, we are getting closer to the hole thing. Leaving our view home at the base of Badger Mountain, we hunkered down in a comfortable condo on the front 9 while we made plans for our house on the back 9 (they are only a few blocks apart).

The house began as a remodel, morphed into a renovation, and turned into a rebuild. Deep breath. Follow the dream. And that we did. Now, as the house re-emerges at the capable and caring hands of Jim McAloon Construction, we are counting the strokes of time till we can make our way home, there.

Driving down George Washington Way this morning, I encountered a sea of pink stretching along the sidewalk. Upon closer inspection, I realized that this was a mob of people walking or jogging their way to raise awareness for breast cancer. It was a reminder to grope my chest and to be thankful for no lumps. Just another current event happening in Tri Cities.

Okay, we take out selves for granted often. And, I have found a cure - at least one. Take it from my girl-friend! We attended the CAbi fashion show previewing the season's latest attire. After shopping samples and booking a spring show, we enjoyed chocolate dipped strawberries while catching up with familiar faces.

On the way out of town, we stopped at River House where my friend immediately gravitated toward the Caldrea products. She selected a fine scented selection of kitchen and cleaning products as I realized that this is one of those - things - that smells so good when I visit her very welcoming home. I was fortunate to receive a sample of the Sea Salt Neroli dish soap, and am now hooked. "Dishes can be a bore; but - no more!"

A Day in the Life

I usually have a plan for my day. Sometimes I go to great lengths to secure the schedule. And, most often, life takes me by the reins ... enjoy the ride.

Today was like that. I sent my son off to school (love the big yellow school bus) and joined seven girl friends for lunch at Thai Spice, a favorite for Thai food in Tri Cities! Though I am not typically a fan of "trough" style dining, the buffet here was fresh and fun. Every dish was delightful, especially when washed down with the decadent Thai Iced Tea!

As I departed to run some errands of choice, I was called to the school where my son awaited stitches. He took one on the chin when falling from the monkey bars. Thankfully we were near KGH Walk-in Care where we were treated immediately and well. He is all sewed up, and very brave.

Now, I am confronted with life's two absolutes. Death and taxes. Our accountant of, well, let's just say many years, died. Meanwhile, we had the great fortune of meeting Tom O'Brien of LeMaster Daniels at a charity auction, and so signed on with this local firm. A beautiful office was comfortable while I completed the new client paperwork. Then, in what can be considered enjoyable when dealing with taxes, I spent about an hour going over the numbers. It always feels better getting past tax season. Now one year is behind and another ahead of me.

Finally home, I relaxed with a glass of Vireo from Goose Ridge. As I enjoyed the aromatic influence of this blend, I amused myself with recollections and comparisons of the days - the one I planned and the one I had. My son is proud of his new scar - we have learned that almost every guy from 5-80 has one similar on the chin.

Lunch today was off the beaten path at a roadside haunt called Sage Port Grille. Truly a haven for H.O.G.s and others with an appetite for breakfast or lunch ... or an occasional dinner while enjoying camp and circumstance.

Memorabilia and memorable statements are sure to amuse when the conversation lulls. A fun place to gather ... right on the river.

While chewing on a Reuben, I contemplated my design for a Mardi Gras mask to be auctioned at a benefit for the Hanford Reach Interpretive Center. I opted to theme it for the regional wine country, utilizing colors inspired by New Orleans (purple, green, gold) and adding a touch of platinum to highlight the piece. Entitled Quin du Vin (Harlequin of Wine), the mask is one of my favorite creations. May it fetch a fine fortune for the cause. May I find more opportunities with the local group 509 Artists. UPDATE: The Mardi Gras event reportedly raised $11,000!

Ahhhhh... a Spa

It was time to gather with girlfriends for a day of "we" time. We met at Nouveau Skin Spa to pamper the flesh and the refresh spirit. It wasn't easy pulling up to the commercial-looking complex and believing that I could be whisked away, but the minute I opened the door to be greeted by deep color and a water fall, the journey was on!

First on my agenda was the Nouveau Facial where my mug was anointed with essential oils and brushed with unguents. I was especially blessed to be treated by the founder, Sunny, herself. Next, I was "rocking on" with a Medistone massage at the caring hands of Stormy. Heated stones pressed upon my skin, relieving every tension. I floated to the makeup vanity to get dusted with mineral powder and ready for the rest of the day.

More relaxing was on the agenda ... The Gathering Place at Bookwalter Winery for a bottle of Protagonist - the feisty red blend with a Merlot star! We enjoyed the wine with a plate of five artisan cheeses (my fave was the Rogue Creamery Smokey Bleu). After joining the Book Club to enjoy the privileges of membership, we selected a case of wines to take home.

Hot Italian Nights ~ A Runway Hit

Evenings are great time to venture to the airport ... especially if you are not leaving town! Florentyna's restaurant located in the Pasco airport brings a history of local flavor to treat your palate, thanks to the talent of Cindy Goulet. Always of interest are the themed menus such as the current Hot Italian Nights (which is rumored to be repeated for Valentine's Day). Our selections fascinated us with flavor.

We were enchanted with the tale of his m100 wine being named in honor of his grandmother (Mary, who lived to be 100).

Gathering for an evening out is always fun. Begin with a table for eight at The Cedars on the river. All raved about the salad bar. And the beer soaked steak was a fave. Of course it was all the much better paired with Canon de Sol wines! Meritage to start. Merlot with salad. Syrah with the main course. Viognier with dessert.

Conversation enlivened with every course!

Then a trip to Roxy Wine Bar fed our Saturday night fever for entertainment. Sunk in to soft sofas, we gathered around a table to enjoy a bottle of Fidelitas m100 (the featured flavor) while enjoying the strum and hum of Brian Holbrook. Catching the beat while catching up with life stories ... then while we strolled away from the evening, we all waved and wished "let's do this again."

White Pass, Sore ...

SUPER SUNDAY took on a whole new meaning as we went to White Pass (elev. 4500 ft.) with snowboards! We were outfitted with gear from Sporthaus where you can find almost everything for almost every sport - Rent or Buy!

Upon arrival, we enlisted in a beginner's lesson. This was key to making headway on the hill. Then, after spending the better part of 7 hours in "down" time, I was doing the "skid" and the "falling leaf" over the mountain and through the snow.

Exhausted, we returned home to become couch potatos just in time to catch the best of the Superbowl (second half). Now, I am searching for a good massage ...

All Americans

Winter calls us to the ice for skating and hockey. And, all the excitement of slapping and sticking come together at the Toyota Center when the Tri City Americans meet opponents within the Western Hockey League. It is beautiful to see the deft maneuvers that push the puck past the goalie and into the net. Unfortunately, many a game is interrupted by a barbaric brawl while the crowd cheers it on ... usually things are tempered before a stomach turning bash draws blood.

And after Sunday home games, fans are invited to skate with the Americans. Call ahead to reserve your spot on the ice. A good time is guaranteed, especially after a win.

When the appetite strikes, every sports fan's favorite snack is available to tempt indulgence. Lots of souvenirs let you support your team, and your country. How great is that?!

It has been an adventurous time of late. My family moved from the dream home we built in order to pursue a new dream. This one lands us on the green, green grass of the golf course. Now home. Watch for more about our own Big Amazing Renovation, right here in Tri Cities.

Another moving experience we celebrated of late is that of Columbia Valley Luxury Cars. They have found an incredible venue for showing and selling inventory of sexy vehicles. My husband is drooling over a Ferrari with low miles and high curb appeal. I like the convertible BMW. There really is something for everyone.

If you are in search of ideas to employ when remodeling, building ,or decorating your home, the Parade of Homes is a great event to visit. But don't limit yourself to the selection of award winning houses. Make it a point to travel to new developments, whether local or out of town, where you can walk through model homes in an effort to get the widest perspective possible (bring a camera). With every new intrigue, there sparks a light that might lead to innovation or even invention. It's also fun to dream outside the box.

After being indoors for the view, take a break to enjoy nature ... hike a trail on Badger Mountain. And notice the call for donations - it is never too late nor too little when you give to preservation of nature. "Gimme my space!"

It has been a roller coaster ride to the end of summer. Having experienced everything from Hurricane Harbor & Magic Mountain to Disneyland to Silverwood Theme Park and finally the local fair, suffice it to say "there's no place like home."

The lessons from Acres of Diamonds glisten ever more brilliantly after recent travels. For a water park, Boulder Beach is a nice drive away. Closer yet is the Hermiston Family Aquatic Center! Either offers a splash of a good time, comparable to Hurricane Harbor in sunny SoCal. Or for a free soak, step into the river!

Then there is the ride thing. Get bang for the buck at Silverwood ... or wait till August and enjoy the fare at the Benton Franklin Fair!

Join the club. Among the clubs to explore : Meadow Springs Country Club, Tri City Country Club, Canyon Lakes Golf, Horn Rapids Golf Club. These clubs usually offer a range of membership opportunities from Social for those who wish to enjoy club activities (dining, the pool, wine tasting, bar be que, special events, and etc.) to Family to Regular which includes almost unlimited golf opportunites. What a joy to swill mojitos or margaritas and swapping stories after any sort of play!

Save the world. Get in on the fundraising action by participating with any of many guilds or foundations. The Children's Hospital Guilds plan events to increase resources. This is one of many opportunities.

Hit the trail. Become one of the many Friends of Badger Mountain. Efforts for land preservation and conservation put a wonderful hike at your feet! Remember to bring plenty of water (but not too much because the loo is at the base of the hill).

This one is all about finding balance ...

A recent death in the family has helped remind me all how precious life is. "No one gets out of this one alive." Be boldness. Be love. Be beauty.

A stroll along the river led me to wade in the cool waters. I was thankful for the refreshing treat to my toes. While standing ankle-deep at the river's edge, I stumbled across an infinity of beautiful colors as the wet stones revealed their authentic selves. So many attracted my attention, however I restricted my selection to three. These I held in my hands and "inscribed" them with my thoughts.

Peace. Forgiveness. Opulance. We can change the world, together. Then I tossed them back into the water. Then, last evening, I watched as lightening lit up the sky with a show of power and focus. Thunder drummed past overhead. And, drops fell from heaven.

Follies & Fashion & Fidelitas

TAN YOUR HIDE, HIDE YOUR TAN ... Artwalk and the Water Follies visited Tri Cities bringing many out to the river's edge. In the warm summer sunshine, many were tanning their hides while showing off various forms of body art ~ tattoos, piercings, cleavage, crevices, and more! Fashion statements abound.

To hide the tan come September, CAbi representatives introduced the Fall Fashion line up. A full house gathered at the Café at Queensgate to enjoy the runway models in CAbi wear. I particularly taken by the flapper style shift dress. It moves in the most delightful way.

While viewing the clothes, we were treated to the most delightful treats ~ my favorite being the vanilla mini cupcakes with pink frosting.

I ended the week with a delish dinner at P.F. Chang's ~ ambiance and all! Usually a take-out diner, we snagged a rare empty table. Thus I sat for a while sipping through a bottle of Fidelitas 2004 Optu with family, reminiscing about hydroplanes and flappers, enjoying our food piping hot!

Digging It ... Here & There.

This week was an adventure in getting to know the neighbors!

First, a road trip to the state next door - Idaho - for rockhounding! Just a drive out of Tri Cities through Pullman (Cougar territory) and past Clarkia (as close as one can pinpoint it on a map), the road leads to the Emerald Creek Garnet Area where Star Garnets are tucked in the soil. These 12-faceted gem stones look like dried raisins covered in cocoa - if you can find them. Clean 'em up and you will see the deep burgundy and purple hue in the light. One lucky digger came up with a golf-ball sized gem that might likely host a star inside, thus fetching thousands of dollars! Our take was more conservative. However, the quest for treasure unearthed priceless fun.

Returning home, we were beckoned to a block party & barbeque! Sweet summer sizzle as families gathered in the cul de sac to share dishes, swap stories, and play. Karaoke, step aside! The center of attention was the Wii Rock Band Special Edition and, since three neighbors own Wii sets, we could Wii, Wii, Wii all the way home.

One Affair After Another ~ FUNdraising Tri Cities

The buzz around town is usually alive with the latest philanthropic affair. These events are unique opportunities to gather, imbibe, socialize, and ... bid, buy, beget.

There are many memorable opportunities in which to indulge while giving to a worthy cause. An example is the New England Clambake we bid for last spring. On this particular weekend, we enjoyed an exquisite and exclusive feast for twelve, brought fresh from the coast to our local Cañon de Sol winery!

The chefs were wearing "new hats" as the team from Henager, Black & Ciabattoni Dentistry donned aprons and concocted the brew of shellfish, potatoes, corn, onions, and spices. A dozen diners were treated to a feast of cool hors douvres, an array of wines, a whole lobster accompanied by oysters and clams, plus all the sides. For dessert, barrel tasting and cigars ... next time, we will bid higher!

The Pasco airport is definitely a destination when I am headed out of or in to Tri Cities. Greeting me either way is Florentyna's offering regional flavors and refreshing savors for all travelers! There is a full restaurant in the airport (that offers catering, too!) and a snack bar once on the inside of security. I have had lattes & muffins in the morning and margaritas & nachos in the evening ~ and I have always been delighted.

Traveling and taste buds are not the only reasons to visit PSC (the airport code for Pasco) ... now there is another inspiration to swing by ~ finding local treasures to treat one another, here or there, with the finest gifts from the Tri Cities area. The goodies are all displayed neatly in the River News & Gifts store presented by Florentyna's. My personal favorite, of course, the t-shirts! One of the pleasures of the Tri Cities is the theater of skies. Ranging from clear blue to billowing clouds to multi-colored reflections of the setting sun and more, there is always a breathtaking view. Mine was hindered by spotty, dusty, smeared windows to the world.

Yes, I had become behind in my spring cleaning efforts and the window washing task was daunting in light of all my tasks. Thankfully, I enlisted help from . I recommend the service and the refreshing outlook!

Having this done, I could return to other pressing matters ... preparing for my Master Mind meeting. This monthly gathering inspires development and enlightenment as we look within to identify and address the behaviors and emotional habits that create barriers to achieving happiness. Some inspirations that guide our current endeavors include the works of Eckhart Tolle (A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose, The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment), and Wayne Dyer (Change Your Thoughts - Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao), and Marianne Williamson (A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of "A Course in Miracles"). Looking in can help one understand the world, thus giving one wisdom in our responses and reactions.

The weather in this region coupled with available land has spawned golf galore. Yes, I have caught the craze. And, I decided to get into the swing (pun intended) of golf, again. My game has been erratic, sporadic, enigmatic, to say the least. This time, I am serious. I have a plan. I am making a commitment to Play Golf.

First step, I signed up for a one-on-one lesson from Meadow Springs Country Club pro, Jackie Stevens. In one hour, with one club, I repeated three magic moves that would get my game on. Stability or the ability to coil rather than swoosh through a swing; fingertip grip on the club to allow it to flow (I finally got this one after blistering both hands); and, what I refer to as a wing - pulling my elbow away from my ribs. After the hour of power, I said thanks to Jackie, and we agreed to meet again once I "owned" this motion series. So, I stayed to swing the club for another half hour, hoping to never forget what I was beginning to know.

My fatigue tapped me on the shoulder, on the lower back, on the thighs, on the forearm ... I was wiped out. At home, I recalled the wisdom of Homer in The Iliad "Whenever a man is tired, wine is a great restorer of strength."

Thus, I reclined and self-medicated with a bottle of Cañon de Sol Syrah ... que syrah syrah. The deep red jammy fruit and spice coursed through my veins, relieving tension in every muscle. Ahhhh. And, with this prescription my palate was quite pleased.

A River Runs Through Us ...

Summer Solstice. The weather invites me out to play while the rivers rush by carrying greetings to the sea. As I stroll through Howard Amon park, I stop to count my blessings, whispering each one to the waters of the Columbia, knowing they will travel to the Pacific, and perhaps beyond ...

Thank you. Thank you for the bounty of farm fresh produce and the Farmers Markets offering a cornucopia of delights. Today, I visited The Parkway in Richland where locally grown goodies are available every Friday from 9-1.

Thank you for a season of outdoor delight. Thank you for the friends I have grown to cherish, and for those I have yet to know. Thank you for the salmon steaks, the grapeseed oils, and the wonderful wines to sip and savor.

With gratitude, I intend healing for and through the life sustaing waters of earth, of air, and of all. Finally, I thank Dr Emoto for showing us the expressions of water, giving me greater reverence for every single dew drop. Splash peace around town ... and over the rivers ... through the woods ... etc. Catch the current running through Tri Cities!

Get Your Groove, Girl Friend

This one is dedicated to the feminine ... and it might be of interest for guys, too ...

Never having looked at an episode of the television series, I went to see the film "Sex and the City." What a wonderful surprise. I was stirred through laughter, tears, frustration, and a deepened appreciation for my friends of the girl persuasion. The story exposed so many facets of feeling ~ love, loyalty, betrayal, regret, fear, healing, tenderness, tolerance, truth ... and, did I say, love?

Afterward, we headed to the bar for Cosmopolitans, of course. And, though we were at an Applebee's, it resonated as well as any bar in any area code ... where two or more are gathered, girls rock!

The highlights were revisited with every social opportunity. One friend asked me how I could find the film so moving among all the provocative scenes? To which I replied that we've all seen nudity, what's the big deal? "Sex and the City" includes sex ... and ... the ... city. 'nuff said.

Meanwhile, I am reinventing me in (very early) preparation for my 50th (for which I finally have a role model of both what I want and what I don't). In an effort to remain true to my authentic self, I revisit my Style Statement. Creative Presence. Crafted for me by Carrie McCarthy, co-founder of Carrie & Danielle and co-author of "Style Statement," these two words encapsulate my nature, my essence and provide a filter, when needed, in decision making. Get the book and give it a try!

And, then, to really dig deep, I recommend EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) with instructor Anne Wendt, owner of Realign Abundance. The EFT process is used for a variety of goals including professional growth, sports performance, and stress relief. Anne guided me through the tapping sequence while visiting painful memories and the consequential anxiety I had been experiencing. The result is an emotional lightening and a baggage dump. How refreshing. Next time, I am going to ask Anne to help me tap my way to an improved golf game!

Wine, Women, and Song ...

Experience Tri-Cities Washington.

A couple events this week were remarkable, and they are highly recommended! First, do consider booking a barrel tasting with winemaker John Bookwalter. Eight of us arrived at the Bookwalter Winery in Richland and were graciously escorted to the barrel room. We enjoyed white wines with fine cheeses and charcuterie, pickled vegetables with warm fondue, chicken skewers, and toasted breadsticks.

Then came the red wine. John presented the Merlots first, contrasting flavor subtleties achieved from different barrels. We moved to Cabernet Sauvignon and then Syrah as we realized the deepening hue in our glasses. Finally, the treasured blends ~ these that set apart the winemaker from all others. And, as at the wedding in Cana, we were delighted with the best wine saved for last ... Finally, we retreated to the lounge to enjoy a bottle recommended by our host while we listened to live music and enjoyed lively conversation, happily ever after.

And, then, an evening of music appreciation and the exploration of art and healing hosted by the Tri Cities Cancer Center Foundation. It was deemed a perfect opportunity for a "high heels night" (new moniker for girls' night out). Four of us donned our seasonal black and white with a dash of browns and khaki, stepped into our stylin' shoes, and gathered at the Battelle Auditorium in North Richland. We clacked our heels in line for a glass of Fidelitas and Country Gentleman hors d'oeuvres while we enjoyed the fountain~surrounded building.

Then we were treated to an exclusive , soul stirring, spirit-lifting, mind-enhancing performance by Ashana. Quartz crystal singing bowls resounded and hummed along with soaring and chanting vocals that left one feeling lightened ... peaceful ... and perhaps even encouraged.
